John Wick: Chapter 2 (Movie Review)

PRAISES:

Starring Keanu Reeves (Keanu, The Matrix), Laurence Fishbourne (The Matrix, Passengers), and Ruby Rose (xXx: Return of Xander Cage, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter), John Wick: Chapter 2 brings some big names together with new ones for a well choreographed and well acted movie. The plot, however, was less than impressive and had a lot of problems. Laurence Fishbournes character seemed squeezed in and unnecessary and some of the characters were unbelievable. Also, the whole lore of the Continental and the underground assassin society was very forced and unbelievable, taking away the gritty, realistic edge that was so loved in the original.

PLOT:

Picking up immediately after the first film, John Wick is retired and revenge has been taken, There is, however, one piece of unfinished business to attend to; a blood oath taken years ago. When he completes his oath and kills the sister of a crime lord (who paid him to do so), the crime lord puts a price on Wick’s head ($7,000,000) open to everyone.

PROBLEMS:

Laurence Fishbourne’s character and his army of homeless people was unbelievable and unnecessary. The bright subtitles that were questionable in the original were very overused.

POINTS:

Artistic Impression: 🌟⭐

Enjoyment: 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Overall: 🌟🌟⭐

PETTY TRIVIA:

1) John Wick (Reeves) says to the Bowery King (Fishburne) “So I guess you have a choice”. This phrase, or variations of it, was a constant theme of these actors’ previous collaboration, the Matrix Trilogy

2) Ruby Rose’s character Ares is never actually referred to by name in the film. Her name is only revealed in the credits to be Ares, though it also appears next to a photograph of her earlier in the film, in the Bowery’s headquarters.

3) The DJ performing at the party in Rome is “Le Castle Vania” who wrote music for both John Wick movies.

4) Director Chad Stahelski was Keanu Reeves’ stunt double in the Matrix trilogy.

5) Director Chad Stahelski and co-director of the first film David Leitch mentioned in Screen Junkies interview how there were several different story ideas for John Wick 2, including ones which would have him saving his daughter or some love interest.
